Fundamentals

Understanding the Accelerator Oscillator (AC)

The Accelerator Oscillator (AC) is a Bill Williams momentum indicator... (also called acceleration deceleration oscillator) is a Bill Williams indicator that works alongside the Alligator and Awesome Oscillator.

How the AC Works in Automated Trading

  • Green Bars (Rising): Current momentum is accelerating -- the driving force is increasing
  • Red Bars (Falling): Current momentum is decelerating -- the driving force is weakening
  • Zero-Line Crossover: Shift from acceleration to deceleration (or vice versa) -- key signal point
  • Bar Color Change: Two consecutive bars of the same color after a color change signal directional shifts

The AC is calculated as the difference between the Awesome Oscillator (AO) and a 5-period simple moving average of the AO. This means the AC essentially measures how quickly momentum itself is changing -- the "speed of the speed."

Key Principle: The AC is a leading indicator -- it changes direction before the Awesome Oscillator, which in turn changes before price. This creates an early warning system: AC turns first → AO turns second → Price turns last.

Together with the Alligator and Awesome Oscillator, the Accelerator Oscillator (AC) (also known as the Accelerator/Decelerator Oscillator) forms Bill Williams' complete trading system for automated strategies.

Strategy 1: AC Zero-Line Crossover

Momentum Shift Trading

AC Zero-Line Crossover strategy showing momentum shift entries when AC crosses above and below zero

The Zero-Line Crossover Strategy tests trades when the AC crosses from negative to positive territory, or vice versa. When AC crosses from below to above zero, short-term acceleration is rising. When it crosses from above to below zero, acceleration is falling.

Setup in Tradeworks:

  1. Add Accelerator Oscillator indicator to your strategy
  2. Parameters are fixed (no user-adjustable settings -- AC uses default AO calculation minus 5-period SMA)
  3. Configure entry conditions:
    • Open Position Buy Signal: Accelerator Oscillator value crosses from below to above 0
    • Open Position Sell Signal: Accelerator Oscillator value crosses from above to below 0

Trade Management

  • Stop Loss Exit Signal:
    • For longs: 'Strategy symbol BID price is less than Previous bar low minus (1.5Ã- ATR)'
    • For shorts: 'Strategy symbol ASK price is greater than Previous bar high plus (1.5Ã- ATR)'
  • Take Profit Exit Signal:
    • For longs: 'Strategy symbol BID price is greater than Previous bar close plus (3Ã- ATR)'
    • For shorts: 'Strategy symbol ASK price is less than Previous bar close minus (3Ã- ATR)'
  • Testing note: Compare chart intervals and instruments in backtesting before deciding where this setup fits your approach.
  • Filter: Use with Moving Average (200-period) to only take signals in the direction of the prevailing trend

Strategy 2: AC Histogram Color Change

Acceleration/Deceleration Signals

AC Histogram Color Change strategy showing two consecutive green or red bars as entry signals

The Color Change Strategy is based on Bill Williams rules: when the AC histogram prints two consecutive green bars, momentum acceleration is rising. Two consecutive red bars can signal falling acceleration. This setup tests color changes before waiting for a zero-line crossover.

Setup in Tradeworks:

  1. Add Accelerator Oscillator indicator to your strategy
  2. Configure color-change entry conditions:
    • Open Position Buy Signal (AC above zero): AC value is greater than 0 AND AC value is greater than AC previous value (one green bar confirmation when above zero)
    • Open Position Buy Signal (AC below zero): AC value is greater than AC previous value AND AC previous value is greater than AC value (2 bars back) -- two consecutive green bars required below zero
    • Open Position Sell Signal (AC below zero): AC value is less than 0 AND AC value is less than AC previous value (one red bar confirmation when below zero)
    • Open Position Sell Signal (AC above zero): AC value is less than AC previous value AND AC previous value is less than AC value (2 bars back) -- two consecutive red bars required above zero

Trade Management

  • Stop Loss Exit Signal:
    • For longs: 'Strategy symbol BID price is less than Moving Average (20) value minus (2Ã- ATR)'
    • For shorts: 'Strategy symbol ASK price is greater than Moving Average (20) value plus (2Ã- ATR)'
  • Take Profit Exit Signal:
    • For longs: 'Strategy symbol BID price is greater than Previous bar close plus (2.5Ã- ATR)'
    • For shorts: 'Strategy symbol ASK price is less than Previous bar close minus (2.5Ã- ATR)'
  • Testing note: Compare chart intervals and instruments in backtesting before deciding where this setup fits your approach.
  • Filter: Use with Awesome Oscillator -- only take buy signals when AO is also positive, sell signals when AO is negative

Strategy 3: AC + Awesome Oscillator Twin Signal

Bill Williams System

AC plus Awesome Oscillator Twin Signal strategy showing combined momentum confirmation

The Twin Signal Strategy combines the AC with the Awesome Oscillator for combined momentum tests. Since the AC measures the rate of change of the AO, requiring both to align creates a stricter momentum filter: entries are tested only when momentum direction and acceleration align.

Setup in Tradeworks:

  1. Add Accelerator Oscillator and Awesome Oscillator to your strategy
  2. Configure dual-confirmation entry conditions:
    • Open Position Buy Signal: Awesome Oscillator value is greater than 0 AND Accelerator Oscillator value crosses from below to above 0
    • Open Position Sell Signal: Awesome Oscillator value is less than 0 AND Accelerator Oscillator value crosses from above to below 0

Trade Management

  • Stop Loss Exit Signal:
    • For longs: 'Strategy symbol BID price is less than Previous bar low minus (2Ã- ATR)'
    • For shorts: 'Strategy symbol ASK price is greater than Previous bar high plus (2Ã- ATR)'
  • Take Profit Exit Signal:
    • For longs: 'Accelerator Oscillator value crosses from above to below 0' (momentum deceleration exit)
    • For shorts: 'Accelerator Oscillator value crosses from below to above 0' (momentum deceleration exit)
  • Testing note: Compare chart intervals and instruments in backtesting before deciding where this setup fits your approach.
  • Filter: Use with Alligator -- only trade when Alligator lines are "open" (trending market)

For Bot Developers: Implementation Tips

Understanding AC Histogram Behaviour

  • No Adjustable Parameters: The AC uses fixed calculations (AO minus 5-period SMA of AO) -- there are no user-configurable period settings
  • Color Logic: Green bar = current bar value higher than previous bar; Red bar = current bar value lower than previous bar
  • Leading Nature: AC typically changes direction 1-3 bars before the AO crosses zero
  • Zero-Line Significance: When AC is above zero AND rising, bullish acceleration is being tested

Combining with Other Indicators

  • Awesome Oscillator (AO): The natural companion -- AC measures AO's rate of change. Together they form a complete momentum system: AO confirms direction, AC confirms acceleration
  • Alligator: Bill Williams' trend indicator. Trade AC signals only when Alligator lines are separated (trending market). Ignore AC signals when Alligator is "sleeping" (lines intertwined)
  • Moving Average: Use a 200-period MA as a trend filter. Take AC buy signals only above the MA, sell signals only below
  • Fractals: Use fractal levels as stop placement -- place stops beyond the nearest fractal in the opposite direction
  • ATR: Useful for position sizing and dynamic stop/target placement with AC strategies

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Trading Against the Trend: AC signals are most effective in the direction of the prevailing trend. Countertrend AC signals produce significantly more false entries
  • Single Bar Signals: Never enter on a single green/red bar. Bill Williams' rules require at minimum one bar confirmation above zero or two bars below zero
  • Ignoring AO Context: The AC without AO context is incomplete. A rising AC below-zero AO line means deceleration of selling, not necessarily a buy signal
  • Choppy Markets: AC generates excessive signals in ranging/choppy conditions. Use Alligator or ADX to filter out non-trending periods

Manageable Beginner Setup

  1. Start with the Zero-Line Crossover: It produces the fewest but clearest signals -- AC crossing above zero = buy, below zero = sell
  2. Add AO Confirmation: Only take AC buy signals when AO is also positive (and vice versa). This single filter removes many false signals
  3. Use Fixed ATR Stops: Set Stop Loss Exit Signal at 2Ã- ATR from entry. This keeps risk rules defined across volatility conditions
  4. Backtest on EUR/USD 4H: Start with one pair on one timeframe. Expand only after reviewing a large enough backtest sample
  5. Paper Trade First: Run the strategy in simulation mode for at least 2-4 weeks before using live capital

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Accelerator Oscillator and the Awesome Oscillator? +

The Awesome Oscillator (AO) measures market momentum as the difference between a 5-period and 34-period simple moving average of bar midpoints. The Accelerator Oscillator (AC) goes one step further -- it measures the rate of change of the AO itself (AO minus its 5-period SMA). Think of it this way: AO tells you momentum direction, while AC tells you whether that momentum is speeding up or slowing down. AC changes direction before AO, making it a leading indicator of momentum shifts.

How does the AC detect early momentum changes? +

The AC detects momentum changes before price by measuring acceleration/deceleration of the driving force. When momentum begins to weaken (even while price still moves in the same direction), the AC histogram changes colour from green to red (or vice versa). This colour change typically precedes the actual price reversal by several bars. The sequence is: AC changes first -> AO changes second -> Price changes last. This gives automated systems an early warning advantage.

Can the AC work as a standalone indicator for automated trading? +

The AC can generate signals on its own, but many rule sets test it alongside the Awesome Oscillator and a trend filter such as the Alligator. As a standalone tool, the AC may produce many signals in ranging markets and lacks directional context. Test AC as a timing input within a broader system where AO and trend filters add context.

Why does the AC require two green bars below zero but only one above zero? +

This is Bill Williams' original rule based on the principle of 'going against the current.' When AC is above zero, momentum is already accelerating in the buy direction -- one confirmation bar is sufficient. Below zero, you're buying against current momentum deceleration, which carries more risk, so two consecutive green bars are required to confirm the shift is genuine. The same logic applies in reverse for sell signals. This asymmetry reduces false entries in countertrend conditions.

How do I filter false AC signals in choppy markets? +

Three effective filters: 1) Add the Alligator indicator and only trade when its lines are separated (trending market) -- ignore all AC signals when lines are intertwined ('sleeping'). 2) Require AO alignment -- only take buy signals when AO is also positive, sells when negative. 3) Use a higher timeframe filter -- check the daily AC direction and only trade in that direction on the 4-hour chart. Combining all three virtually eliminates choppy-market whipsaws.
